The video and pics here are from our January Club Trip, snow-wheeling Crown Point Road. Notes…
We met at the King Soopers parking lot and departed around 9:00 AM as planned, with a mix of club members and guests. After airing down, 19 vehicles started up the Crown Point trail. One vehicle broke an axle on the trail. Another experienced an air intake issue turned back early. Four vehicles in total turned around early for various reasons. The remaining 15 vehicles continued farther up the trail.
The main trip planner coordinated progress and recoveries as conditions required. Lee and I were tailgunners in our 2025 Jeep Wrangler. We reached approximately 11 miles into the trail. A smaller group went about a mile farther, and another group continued beyond that.
On the way out, Lee drove the Wrangler for a while as he has recently received his driving permit. As trail conditions worsened farther up, I resumed driving. We became stuck once on the way in and were able to winch out using a nearby dead tree as an anchor. After several hours on the trail, we decided to turn around and head back. Once turned around, we became the lead vehicle for the return and became stuck once more in the same area. We were assisted by other folks in the group, a kinetic rope, and traction boards.
The weather was cold but manageable, with temperatures reaching at least 5°F at one point and limited wind. Snowfall increased for a period on the return, briefly reducing visibility, then improved. Snow coverage on the roads toward Fort Collins was greater in the afternoon than at the start of the day. We arrived home around 5:45 PM.
The video here captures the way out but not the way back. Visibility was much worse at times on the way back.
